What a citation is
A citation is a mention of your business on another website. Name, address, phone number - the NAP. It could be a directory listing like Yellow Pages, a review site, a local business association page, or a supplier's "recommended installers" page.
Every citation tells Google the same thing: this business is real, it's established, and here's where it operates. Google uses these mentions to verify your business across the web. The more consistent and reputable the mentions, the more confident Google is - and the higher you rank locally.
Why citations are one of the strongest local ranking signals
For local businesses, citations sit near the top of the ranking factors. They're how Google verifies you actually exist in the place you say you do. A tradie with 20 clean, consistent citations will outrank a tradie with 3, all else being equal - even if the second one has a better website.
Citations are also permanent assets. You build them once and they keep working for years. Unlike ads, they don't stop the moment you stop paying.
Quality beats quantity
More citations isn't automatically better. What matters is:
- Relevance - directories and sites that make sense for your trade. A plumber on a plumbing directory is worth ten listings on generic link farms.
- Consistency - every citation must have identical NAP. One old phone number anywhere undermines everything else.
- Authority - listings on reputable, established sites carry more weight than obscure ones.
Most trade businesses need 15 to 30 quality citations. The work is building them properly and keeping them clean - not spraying your details across every directory on the internet.
How the audit works
Before building anything new, the existing citations get audited. Where are you already listed? Is the NAP correct everywhere? Are there duplicates, old phone numbers, or outdated business names? Fixing what's already wrong is often more valuable than adding new listings - because inconsistencies actively suppress rankings.
Then new citations get built on the directories that matter for your trade and your region, submitted properly, and checked until they're live and indexed.
How long until citations work
Citations take time to index - usually 4 to 6 weeks before they start influencing rankings. They're a compounding asset: month three is stronger than month one, and the effect builds as the citations get crawled, indexed and trusted. That's why they're a core part of a monthly retainer rather than a one-off job.
